There are over  8 languages spoken in Spain not just Spanish. While we have believed that every Spaniard speaks Spanish that is not accurate. There is a big diversity in the language spoken throughout Spain. Castilian, Catalan, Galician, Aráñese, Aragonese, Leonese, Asturian, and Bosque are all different languages that have created a more diverse in the county of Spain. Even some spoken Romance languages that have derived from other languages such as Moroccan and dialects from the Canary Islands.

“The exchange of culture and tradition that those languages engender that make it an interesting and dynamic place.”

The importance of understanding the diversity and identity in languages that  can bring so much life and character to a beautiful country. Over 5 languages can be considered co-official languages spoken in Spain. About 74% of the Spaniard population speak Castilian.

The Catalan language has been wanting to become autonomous and have independence from Spain but has not succeeded. Still belonging to Spain, Barcelona, Valencia and the Balearic Islands Catalan is the majorly  spoken language.

The study of linguistics helps us understand the importance of diversity within different languages. It helps built identity within a region because of it. Languages can be studied but to see and listen to the differences between languages that sound similar is amazing! Broomfield adds that “ Every language discussed here has something to offer curious learners of the world, especially in terms of culture and/or linguistics; and none of them should be overlooked simply because they’re not well-known or widely spoken.”
Thanks to this research we can explore a bit more of what the country of Spain has in sense of diversity in linguistics but also how ignorant one can be if they don’t look for answers. Not everybody in Spain speaks Spanish.
