Code Switching Swiftie
By Delany Barrera
We all love or know at least one Taylor Swift song. She I never would have deeply thought the critically acclaimed pop-artist/country singer would have come so far since “ Picture to Burn” to now “august”. Over time the country singer has now debut with other genres such as country, pop, and now alternative. Now one thing that linguists have noticed is Swifts accent has changed since she established her iconic “ But she wears short skirts/ I wear t-shirts./ She’s cheer captain/ And I’m on the bleachers” to now her pop hit Karma. “Karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me.”
Language is important for all of us in order to communicate and in music we can see the beautiful side of storytelling. Just how Taylor Swift has changed her perspective from country to pop, her music is still filled with melodic lyrics. Like everything else, time has changed social norms and the topics of everyday life. That is one way we can see Swifts music career change because of her audiences, evolution of both music and storytelling, as long as her accent. Code switching might be the best way to describe accent change overtime.
It is most common among music to code-switch because of what is socially motivated at the time. }have noticed as well that American accents have surfaced when code switching in music. In other words called a “Performance” to apease their audiences.” Code switching in genres is not uncommon and generally passed unnoticed, especially if listeners never get a chance to hear artist’s normal speaking voice—unless that voice sings in a new genre where a different accent might be the norm.”
How does all of this tie together with linguistics? Language is important in any way and form. We can see how people and ideas change over time as well as the language/s we speak. Just how we try to communicate by describing, talking, writing, listening, or simply by seeing or hearing three words we can make up a story in our imagination. That is the beauty of language. Creating one way to transmit our thoughts and feelings to another being by using language. Taylor Swifts music has definitely changed over time and because of her accent change we have found a fond liking to her lyrics and they way they are portrayed.
